Netball training can be tough, but this doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Here are six drills that are sure to keep you and your team smiling while you work.

Bob

This game requires players to line up in two parallel lines. The two front players should each hold a ball and face the passer with enough distance between them that a long pass is required. The passer first throws the ball to the front player. The two front players should each hold a ball and face the passer with enough distance between them that a long pass is required. The players all follow suit along the line until the player at the end of the line receives the netball. The final payer keeps the ball and replaces the passer, who becomes the head of the line. Both lines stand up and begin the cycle once more.

Chase the tail

Three players stand in a line and hold each other’s waists. The other team mates try to tag the last player in the line with the netball, while the other two players attempt to defend them. Hunting tag

This is similar to the children’s’ game tag. The team is split into two – one will be prey and one will be hunters. The hunters start with the netball and ‘hunt’ the prey team. Members of the prey team can only be captured by a hunter who has the ball. One will be hunters. The hunters start with the netball and ‘hunt’ the prey team. Group hunting

This game combines elements of the previous two. Using one part of the court, the player who is ‘it’ must try to tag other players. Tagged players hold hands with the hunter and try to tag other players until only one untagged player remains. Netball England has some further ideas for fun yet effective training games.

Look out

Half the players stand in the centre third and the other half in the goal third, each with four balls. Each team member must throw balls into the opposing half while trying to catch balls thrown by the opposing team. Each team member must throw balls into the opposing half while trying to catch balls thrown by the opposing team.

River dance

Two players hold one another by the shirt, shoulders or arms, and try to tag each other’s feet with their own.
